As from whatever I have experienced while developing applications on .NET, I can certainly say that .NET encourages simplified development. It has the tools that can actually be of great help in one or the other phases of SDLC. As a developer, I do feel that .NET makes the work much more easier in terms of increased efficiency & higher scalability. A developer just needs to concentrate on the algortihm to be implemented and leave rest of the activities to .NET.
For starting with, there are many references you can get on the web but i'll say that do study the technicalities from the documentation provided with the bundled software. This technology is worth a try, get some hands on experience and then you will realise that how easily one can design, develop and deploy the web & windows applications.
